What to do after accidentally deleting files

Deleted important files or emptied the recycle bin? Steps to take immediately to protect them from being overwritten.

Check the easy places first

Look in the Recycle Bin, the 'Recently deleted' album on phones, cloud storage trash folders, and any backups. Restoring from these is completely safe.

Stop writing to the drive

Deleted files remain on most hard disks, pen drives and cards until new data overwrites them. Avoid saving, downloading or installing anything on that drive.

Be careful with recovery software

Never install recovery software on the same drive, and never save recovered files back onto it. If the data is important, ask a professional first.

SSDs and phones are different

On SSDs and modern phones, deleted data may be erased quickly due to TRIM and encryption. Shut down the device and contact us promptly.

Important: Switch the drive off if it makes unusual sounds. Stop using the drive immediately.

Data emergency? Stop using the device and talk to us.

Every extra power-on or new file can reduce your chances. A quick message now helps us advise you before more damage is done.
