What to do when your hard disk is not detected

Hard disk not showing in Windows or BIOS? Learn the safe checks you can do, the warning signs of physical failure, and when to stop.

First, stay calm and stop

A hard disk that is not detected does not always mean the data is lost. But the actions you take in the next few minutes can affect the outcome. If the disk makes clicking, grinding or beeping sounds, switch it off now and do not try again.

Safe checks you can do

If the disk is silent and spins normally, you can check a few simple things: try a different USB port or a known-good cable for external drives, and see whether the disk appears in Disk Management with a size. Do this once or twice, not repeatedly.

What you should not do

Do not run CHKDSK, do not initialise or format the disk if Windows asks, and do not install recovery software on the same disk. Do not open the drive, freeze it or tap it – these old tricks cause permanent damage.

When to get professional help

If the disk is noisy, was dropped, is not detected in BIOS, or shows the wrong capacity, the problem is likely physical or firmware-related. These need professional diagnosis. Contact us and we will explain the next step.

Important: Switch the drive off if it makes unusual sounds. Stop using the drive immediately.
